Field of 65--Version 7

*Sorry for the delay (and the brevity). Seeding reflects games through Sunday, March 1.

1) Connecticut (27-2); North Carolina (25-3); Pittsburgh (26-3); Oklahoma (26-3)
Oklahoma took some lumps with Blake Griffin out of the lineup, but they may end up being the better for it.
2) Memphis (26-3); Louisville (23-5); Kansas (24-5); Duke (24-5)
Since being inserted into the Blue Devils' starting lineup, freshman Elliot Williams has scored double-digits in three of four games.
3) Wake Forest (22-5); Michigan State (23-5); Marquette (23-6); Missouri (24-5)
Point guard Dominic James' broken foot will sideline him for the rest of his senior season and is devastating for Marquette's post-season hopes.
4) Washington (22-7); Clemson (22-6); Purdue (22-7); LSU (25-4)
The SEC may be down this year, but LSU's 13-1 conference record is still pretty incredible.
5) Villanova (23-6); Florida State (22-7); Arizona State (21-7); UCLA (22-7)
Bad week for Arizona State. The Sun Devils were swept on their road trip through Washington.
6) Gonzaga (23-5); Xavier (23-5); California (21-8); Illinois (23-7)
Xavier bounced back from its upset loss to Charlotte, beating George Washington by 18 and winning at Saint Joseph's by 14.
7) Syracuse (21-8); Butler (25-4); South Carolina (20-7);
Utah (20-8)

Syracuse got two much-needed wins this week. The Orange beat Saint John's by 29 and Cincinnati by 24. Sophomore point guard Jonny Flynn scored 38 points and dished out 15 assists in those two games.
8) Texas (19-9); Dayton (24-5); West Virginia (20-9);
Boston College (20-9)

Texas' Dogus Balbay, recently inserted into the starting lineup, has hit double-digit assists in two of the Longhorns' last three contests.
9) Wisconsin (18-10); Tennessee (18-10); BYU (22-6);
Creighton (25-6)

BYU had as good a week as anyone, picking up wins over San Diego State and Mountain West leader Utah. The Cougars look like the second best team in a conference that will get two bids at the very least.
10) Ohio State (18-9); Florida (21-8); Utah State (26-4); Providence (18-11)
Providence enters the Field of 65 after beating top-ranked Pitt. The Friars are now 10-7 in the Big East and have a very good chance of sneaking into the tourney.
11) Penn State (20-9); Arizona (18-11); Minnesota (20-8); Kentucky (19-10)
On the heels of a six-game winning streak, Arizona is now on a three-game losing streak. The Wildcats close out the regular season at home against Cal and Stanford.
12) Saint Mary's (24-5); Davidson (24-6); Maryland (18-10); Virginia Tech (17-11)
Virginia Tech snags the last at-large bid. Texas A&M has pulled even in the Big 12 and is the first team out.
13) VCU (21-9); Siena (23-7); Western Kentucky (21-8);
American U (21-7)

After beating 24-7 Niagara earlier in the season, Siena fell to the Purple Eagles this past week. The rubber match between the conference powers could take place in the championship game of the MAAC tournament. The loser may deserve at-large consideration.
14) Bowling Green (17-11); North Dakota State (23-6);
Weber State (20-8); Stephen F. Austin (19-7)

Bowling Green and Buffalo are tied atop the MAC. Having beaten the Bulls twice this year, the Falcons take the bid.
15) Binghamton (20-8); Tennessee-Martin (21-8);
Robert Morris (21-10); Radford (18-11)

UTM has a slight lead in the OVC standings, but the Murray State Racers are closing strong.
16) Cornell (19-9); Morgan State (19-11); Alabama State (17-8); Jacksonville (17-12); Cal State Northridge (14-12)
Alabama State is 14-1 in the SWAC and is on an eight-game winning streak.

  1. I should note that I put this version of the Field together before the announcement that Patrick Mills will be suiting up for Saint Mary's in the WCC tourney. That will definitely have to be taken into account in the next version.

  2. Texas and Tennessee would be a great 8/9 game, but that's about the only one.
